Lowe's Canada Heroes Campaign

The Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society has been selected as part of the Lowe's Canada Heroes campaign. This means that Lowe’s Lethbridge will be collecting donations on our behalf throughout the month of September! Lowe’s will be collecting donations of $2, $5, or $10 by asking customers at check-out if they would like to contribute. Lowe’s Canada will match 50% of all customer donations up to a maximum of $2,000 per store.

“Avian Summer" is a locally produced wildlife documentary by Rick Andrews. Discover the variety of birds that migrate to Southern Alberta each spring, where they come to find a mate and raise the next generation, before migrating again in the fall. The film is 37 minutes in length and was produced in our region over the past two years. Proceeds from Avian Summer will benefit the Endowment Fund in support of nature-based interpretive programming at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre.

'Avian Summer' by Rick Andrews - Online Film Fundraiser

Join us for the online film premiere two years in the making! “Avian Summer" is a locally produced wildlife documentary by Rick Andrews featuring a variety of migratory birds that fly into Southern Alberta each spring. In the weeks that follow, they will need to find a mate, and successfully raise the next generation, before migrating south again in the fall. You have the option to digitally rent or purchase the film to enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

Shielded within the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains, this unique grassland and forest mosaic is home to many species of rare plants, provides important habitat for wildlife and has been a culturally significant area for thousands of years. This presentation will provide a unique perspective about the importance of connecting to place.

For more than five years, Chris worked as lecturer on ships in which he explored every continent and over 160 ports around the world. From Alaska to the Antarctic and Stockholm to Samoa, birds (and other wildlife) were a constant, yet ever changing companion to his voyages. This presentation will not only be a natural history showcase, but it will also reveal how wildlife encounters enrich our lives and have become meaningful symbols for cultures past and present.

Join Carol and Rick as they take you along on a recent adventure to the Peruvian cities of Lima and Cusco before continuing on through the Inca Sacred Valley to the archaeological sites of Chinchero and Ollantaytambo. From there, ascend with them into the Andes Mountains to the 15th century Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. The adventure will conclude with a visit to the amazing Iguazu Falls straddling the borders of Argentina and Brazil.

The Pantanal is a UNESCO World Heritage and Biosphere Reserve.  It is the largest floodable plain on the planet and home to over 625 birds.  Adventure traveler Joanna Fraser will show highlights of this wonderful  “off the beaten path” area on a visit in November 2019.   She will also show Iguazu Falls on a trip to this spectacle of 275 falls during the rainy season in November 2015.

Find out what life is like on board Europa, a 56m tall - sailing ship, in the vast and unpredictable Southern Ocean toward Antarctica and beyond! John Nightingale spent 52 days at sea, departing from Ushuaia, Argentina sailing through the Beagle Channel, negotiating the infamous Drake Passage en route to the Antarctic Peninsula. Finally crossing the southern Atlantic Ocean, via South Georgia and Tristan Da Cunah to Cape Town, South Africa.

The Wild Side of Love is the Nature Centre's annual fundraising event benefiting nature interpretation within the City of Lethbridge. Funds raised at this year's event will go towards the next iteration of the Master Builder's Brain Zone - an interactive STEM installation.
